The second half started with Sunderland dominating the game, and they found the equalizer just 45 seconds in. Enzo Le Fee laid the ball off for Granit Xhaka, whose shot from the edge of the box deflected off James Tarkowski and in off the underside of the bar. The home crowd was energized by the goal, and the team created more chances, but were unable to score again. The visitors, on the other hand, struggled to get into the game, with only Vitaliy Mykolenko's long-range shot testing the goalkeeper in the final minutes.
The result was enough for Sunderland to move back into the top four, having earned a league-high eight points from losing positions this season. Everton, who had been hoping to secure a third consecutive win over Sunderland, will look to regroup and turn things around at home to Fulham on Saturday.
